Sages Sp. z o.o. has received European Union funding for the project entitled: “Development of specialized algorithms that automatically create accessible alternative versions of specialist graphics for people with visual impairments in order to automatically ensure the accessibility of digital educational materials.”
The project includes research and development work divided into industrial research and experimental development. The industrial research phase focuses on generating new knowledge and developing new algorithms for automatically creating alternative descriptions for artworks, charts, structural chemical formulas, and diagrams. The development phase covers preparing an image-to-text API, implementing the algorithms in the WCAG AI tool, testing, and iterative improvement.
The target group for the project includes both direct users and beneficiaries: lecturers, teachers, and institutions that publish or make digital educational and science communication content available, including publishers, libraries, and research institutions. Indirect beneficiaries include people with disabilities or visual impairments, especially those who study, learn, or expand their knowledge independently.
The project will deliver specialized algorithms that automatically create accessible alternative versions of specialist graphics for people with visual impairments, with a level of precision, detail, fidelity to the original, and readability sufficient to support the accessibility of digital educational materials.
Project value: PLN 4,887,450.00. European Funds contribution: PLN 2,432,225.00.
